Mission: The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) catalyzes solutions to the complex challenges of ocean stewardship and economic growth in the Gulf of Maine bioregion. Our dynamic fusion of science, education, and community gives us range to effect change from multiple directions, while our objectivity and commitment to collaboration make us the go-to organization for marine communities grappling with contentious issues, management transitions, and new business systems.

Ocean Literacy:

Principle 1: The Earth has one big ocean with many features
LabVenture! connects all attending 5th and 6th graders with the Gulf of Maine, regardless of how far away they may live.

Principle 2: The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of the Earth
LabVenture! addresses this in the introduction to visiting students.

Principle 4: The ocean makes Earth habitable
LabVenture! Highlights the interconnectedness of the ocean to many careers and the way people prefer to live.

Principle 5: The ocean supports a diversity of life and ecosystems.
LabVenture! Highlights the interconnectedness of the ocean to many careers and the way people prefer to live. We often feature Census of Marine Life materials, as well as recent studies by our scientists.

Principle 6: The ocean is connected to us and we are connected to it.
See both 4 and 5 above.

Principle 7: The ocean is largely unexplored.
LabVenture! makes a point of bringing up more questions about the ocean and the Gulf of Maine watershed, to empahsize that there is much we still do not know.

Ocean Observing:

We sometimes feature it in student presentations, and are working with former GoMOOS staff to explore new ways to use the data in educational efforts.
