Mission: SEA is an educational institution dedicated to exploration, understanding and stewardship of the oceans, and to the study of humanity’s relationship with the oceans. SEA offers students an interdisciplinary curriculum, on shore and at sea aboard tall ships, that provides challenging voyages of scientific discovery, academic rigor, and personal growth.

Ocean Literacy:

Principle 1: The Earth has one big ocean with many features
We teach this as part of the oceanography course every student is required to take

Principle 2: The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of the Earth
Teaching of plate tectonics, biogenous sediments, etc.

Principle 3: The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate
We teach a semester program titled “Oceans and Climate”

Principle 4: The ocean makes Earth habitable
oxygenous phytoplankton, climate, heat buffer and dispersion, etc.

Principle 5: The ocean supports a diversity of life and ecosystems.
We discuss biodiversity and the major groups of marine organisms

Principle 6: The ocean is connected to us and we are connected to it.
We teach Maritime studies and policy

Principle 7: The ocean is largely unexplored.
We show them first-hand how difficult it is to study the oceans
