NOAA’s Climate Stewards Education Project (CSEP) and Connecticut Sea Grant are collaborating with Federal, State and NGO partners to convene a climate science and education workshop for formal and informal educators. Participants will learn from and interact with climate science, education and communication experts. The workshop will focus on topics of climate science and resilience strategies for the northeast region of the United States, with a goal of connecting educators and their students and/or audiences to the best available science-based information and pedagogic resources.

Registration for the workshop is on a first come first serve basis and the number of participants is very limited! When enrollment has reached capacity, online registration will be closed. Registration is $40 per person. It includes daily lunch, snacks, field trips, and a plethora of resources! Attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation and lodging.

You will receive an email confirming your participation in the workshop only when your registration fee has been processed. A detailed workshop itinerary, lodging and dining recommendations, and additional information will be sent to all confirmed registrants well in advance of the workshop.

All attendees will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation in the workshop as well as the number of professional development hours earned.

A professional development workshop for formal and informal educators who wish to:

  • Translate climate science and resilience to the classroom and/or informal education settings.

Hurricane Island Summer Programs

The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership provides extraordinary opportunities to discover what it takes to make a difference in the world – as students, scientists, citizens, and leaders! Sitting 12 miles off the coast of Rockland, ME, this beautiful off-the-grid community is an ideal setting for middle and high school programs in science, sustainability, and leadership. Our hands-on 1-2 week summer programs invite students to immerse themselves in the natural world, challenging them to explore and ask questions like trained naturalists in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Programs are small (with a maximum of 12 students) and are led by trained field scientists and educators, providing a level of instructor expertise and maturity you won’t find in other summer experiences. We have programs in Sustainability (HS), Marine Biology (HS and MS), and Island Ecology (HS and MS). Financial Aid is available! No day is complete without hiking, swimming, sailing, or rock climbing. Biomimicry
New England Aquarium

Join with other informal education professionals to explore Biomimicry – the process of emulating nature’s strategies. For 3.8 billion years plants, animals and microbes have been evolving and solving complex problems. Using an approach to innovation that seeks inspiration from nature, Biomimicry often looks to the ocean and marine animals. You are invited to join in exploring this fascinating topic and its potential in engaging a range of audiences through informal education.  This workshop will be an opportunity to learn from experts and practitioners on how Biomimicry can address some of the top environmental issues and how as informal educators we can inspire a new group of innovators to look towards nature to create sustainable solutions. 
 
This workshop, designed for and by informal educators, will include:
·        Keynote address by Sam Stier, Founding Director, Learning with Nature and former Director of Youth Education at Biomimicry 3.8. Sam will provide an introduction to biomimicry with an emphasis on the marine world followed by some examples of how it has been included in informal education for children.
·        Q&A with Sam Stier and group reflections on how Biomimicry can be used as a platform for informal education.
·        Planning and discussion groups based on topic areas the group identifies that will allow each educator to leave with one or more concrete ideas or activities to advance their work.

A workshop series designed to:

• Build your understanding of program evaluation;
• Expand your professional toolbox with practical suggestions and techniques you can use in your organization;
• Create useful evaluation questions, and an overall plan that meets your program’s needs;
• Develop effective data collection strategies;
• Analyze your data and learn how to use your findings to strengthen your program;
• Develop your own capacity to conduct internal evaluations with guidance from PERG’s experienced evaluators.

Zooplankton Workshop – Maine

An Introduction to the Ecology and Taxonomy of Marine Zooplankton (June 19-25) Offered by the Humboldt Institute on the coast of Maine. This seminar provides an in-depth introduction to marine zooplankton. Though the emphasis is on morphology, taxonomy and diversity, it also includes discussions on biogeography, feeding, reproduction, development, behavior and ecology. Standard field methods of collection and laboratory techniques needed to identify zooplankton to the species level are taught.

Workshop – Humboldt Squid Dissection, MA

On February 27, 2010 BOAT CAMP in Newburyport MA will present a one-day workshop on the amazing biology and ecology of Humboldt Squid, including a dissection.  Training includes practical ways to bring the sea into the classroom and other venues (non-educators welcome!). The workshop is part of BOAT CAMP’s Marine Science Saturday series; cost is $10 and advance registration is requested. For more information email boatcamp@gmail.com.

Deadline for submissions is Friday, 2/5/10, to be published online in mid-March.

Teen Ocean Summit

The New England Aquarium’s Teen Ocean Summit is a one-day opportunity for high school students to creatively address the challenges surrounding marine environmental issues. On March 31, 2010 in Waltham MA students will take on roles and work in teams to examine coastal planning.  Based on teachers’ applications, six schools will be invited to bring up to 10 students each.  Priority for attendance will go to classes that have not previously attended the Summit and inner-city schools, based on first-come, first-served application dates.  To request an application and for more information, contact Vickie Cataldo at vcataldo@neaq.org or 617-973-0235.

Build an ROV

Join the Museum Institute for Teaching Science for a lesson in building a remotely operated underwater vehicle, part of the Sea Perch Program.  Free training for K-12 educators will be held from 8:30am to 4pm on January 14 and 15, 2010 at the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester MA.  For more information and to register, email Amy Hoffmaster (ahoffmaster@mits.org) before January 1 with the following information:  name, school, school address, phone number, email address, grade level and subject(s) taught, and electronics/robotics experience.
